Is cooking difficult?

Welcome back to my road map series. This is week 3! In this episode I want to take a little detour down tips and tricks with cooking.

I’ve always loathed cooking. If I can eat out, I will. For me it comes down to pure laziness. Let me say though, if I do cook and when I do cook. I put my entire heart into the dish. A splash of this, a hint of that. I feel like a top level chef. Am I? Well I’m a pretty good baker but when it comes to pans, I tend to overthink it.

Here’s some helpful tips from a not super experienced but happy cook.

Start off with a recipe, I know, I know. A recipe is the last thing I’ll follow. Give me a piece of IKEA furniture and the instructions are the first thing out the door. Once you know the recipe though, you can start to add your own flair. This builds your food knowledge and ability.

Set aside time, what I’ve learned is that cooking takes time. Time to learn, time to master and time to cook. Most recipes once learned take around 20 to 30 minutes. Bread however that’s a labor of love, in time. People say to me, I could never make croissants. It’s mostly me sitting around waiting for the dough.

That leads me to my next tip. You can make whatever you set your mind to. Curry, follow the recipe, sourdough recipe, chicken katsu recipe. You have the power, don’t underestimate yourself. 90% of cooking is just giving it a chance. If you try, the worst that could happen is you mess something up. Humans learn best from mistakes. Take everything as a learning experience.

Last, just get out there and start cooking. We need to eat to survive and I don’t know about you but I like food. If it’s necessary for survival we might as well be good at it. Pick up the spatula, turn on the burner and see where you end up.
