Are we ok with a life of debt?

I look at my bank account often. I like to keep track of my income. I’m not frugal by any means. I save every month but I do so knowing I’ll spend the rest. Outside of food and luxury most of my money is spent on debt or life obligations. I spend $850 a month on my student loans and $827 a month on rent. Even with a good paying job I spend my life paying back others.

Most Americans are in the same boat whether it’s medical, school, cars or houses. It seems like the funneling of all economic activity comes down to keeping everyone in debt. Every new exciting object seems to have a price and that price is always out of reach.

Let me explain. We are told from a young age that a higher education helps. Unless you have a full ride your debt starts here. Let’s say you don’t go to school. You start a job, hopefully you have transportation. Unless you live in downtown New York, you now have a car loan. What about a house? Shelter would be nice. Now you have a mortgage. What if I’m blessed in life and I can buy everything with cash? Good you can pay taxes and insurance. While all this is going on hopefully other life activities like divorce and injury don’t add to the calculator.

It makes you wonder, if we pay for everything for the life of the item. Do we truly own it? I’m not giving a solution to this world. Nor am I saying there is something worse or better. It’s just a thought, on a blog, by someone living in a world of debt.
