Falling Angels

Here’s a horror story I wrote a long time ago. Please enjoy!

It was evening, the sun was just setting, its golden rays turning to a hazel blue as it slowly lowered behind the hills.

My girlfriend leaned back against the basket railing. ” It’s an amazing view isn’t it?”, she asked with a smile. ”Almost as pretty as you”, I responded as I put my arm around her and pulled her closer.

It was truly beautiful, the meadows and farmland speckled on the hillside. Silhouetted by the fading sunlight. On the horizon, you could see trees here and there with the occasional house. I had the one I loved close to my side and the world was completely at peace.

”Are you ready to open the bottle of champagne?” I asked her as I bent down for a bottle. ”Yes, I want to try the.” She stopped mid-sentence. I froze also, as I heard faint screams coming from the sky.

I stood up and looked over the railing. I stepped back shocked. There was now a speck of fire hovering in the middle of the sky. Out of it could be heard faint screams.

Then almost as if a ball had been dropped from someone’s hand. A human fell out of the fire. At least it looked like a human it fell twisting and screaming. The fire surrounding them twisted and lashed as they fell. It seemed as if time itself stood still. Their bodies contorted as they fell through the beautiful hazel sunset. They passed below the horizon. All I could see now was an orange glow disappearing into the shadows of the valley.

Before I could get my bearings on what I had just seen, another person fell from the fire. This time they weren’t on fire I could tell it was human. They were also screaming as they plummeted to the earth. Then as if we hadn’t seen enough another human fell from the fire. This one on fire but not making a sound. They were followed closely by another person. Thirteen people in all fell in front of my eyes.

The fire slowly fell too, before it too disappeared in the dark shadows of The Valley. The sun was now almost completely gone.

We both stood in horror as we tried to contemplate what we had just seen. Neither of us willing to speak.

We landed safely and we both didn’t speak on the drive home. Two weeks later we got an email from the company. Due to recent tragedies, we have changed our policy. Smoking will no longer be allowed on our hot air balloons.
