A short horror story for your reading pleasure. Have a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday Season!
The window made a slight creaking noise as I lifted it. I paused to listen. It seemed like it hadn’t alerted anyone inside. The wall was tall on this house. I needed to jump a little to rest my stomach on the window frame. This was always the scariest part. I slowly shimmied forward until I could reach the floor inside with my hands, and plop. I paused, I landed way harder on the floor than intended. Still not a peep. At least these people are sound sleepers I thought. I stood up, the old wood floor creaked as I stepped. I was right next to a bedroom. I could tell by the blue night light casting out into the hall. I peered into the room. I took note of the bunk bed to the left. Two girls were fast asleep. Their room is princess themed. On the floor sat a pink rug, and their bed had a pink princess frill covering the exterior. The girl on the top bunk had her leg slumped over the bed side. Looked like she was going to fall. I stepped past. As soon as I did, a door down the hall swung open to reveal a dark room. I froze. A man stepped out yawning while he scratched his chest. I stepped back. I hope the dark shadows me. The man turned his back to me and walked down the hall. He turned left in the kitchen at the end. A sigh of relief washed over me. Good he hadn’t seen me. I need to finish my mission. I walked down the hall. The light from the fridge told me where the man was in the kitchen. I stepped into the adjacent bathroom and waited. The man walked inches from my face. I could have breathed on his cheek. He yawned again as he re-entered his room and closed the door. It’s amazing how little people notice. Even in their own homes. This job never gets easier. I stepped into the now vacant kitchen. On the other side lights brought the living room to life. They danced and whirled. It always surprises me how far people will go to invite me in. People don’t realize what it means. I smiled at the thought. I love to watch, to calculate, to peer. Once I’m invited in there’s no getting rid of me. I’ll learn your every move, your sleep pattern, your home layout. I know everything. I will reward you for this access because I do feel slightly bad. Oh the things I have. Oh the things I know. Oh I do love my job. I step into the brightly lit living room and left the box under the tree.
