Do as the Romans

My Spanish tutor said something the other day that made me think a lot. She said the age old saying “When in Rome, Do as the Romans do.” This came with a discussion around what’s the hardest part about moving to a new country. The hardest part in our discussion is realizing, you may never be a part of the culture because you’ll always be seen as different. So how do we live like the Romans when we aren’t? This thought resonates with me. I’ve lost because of this very thing. Fear of not being, fear of failure. Not only from others but myself. As I now stumble over my spanish words. I remember someone telling me how hard it was to explain their emotions in another language. Now I know exactly what they meant. How do you feel Roman when you can’t even say how you feel? How do you fit in, when the world isn’t you? Maybe that’s the point. It doesn’t matter what stage you are in life, it doesn’t matter your background. Hell it doesn’t even matter how hard you try. Sometimes life has a way of picking you up and a way of taking you down. So do as the Romans. Travel the world, be yourself, try your hardest. And live like you want to. It’s something I needed to hear. I feel lost at times, unsure of the future. Nervous to take the next step. Wherever I end up, wherever I go. I know one thing. I’ll be there.
