The Watch (Protecting the House Part II)

She was as beautiful as the day they first met. I hope she thinks of me as much as I think of her. A deep pain cut into his heart an ache that over the years had never mended. He looked at her through the opaque water in front of him. Around its edges orange and green lights flicked in the center and the image stayed solid. She was walking with friends and it looked like they were shopping. He’d take her back in a moment’s notice, life was cruel. “You know it’s not nice to pry.” The shadows moved near his chair. “Does that apply to both of us?” Lilith walked out with a smile on her face. “When I watch it’s because I have a business question. You watch because you have an issue with giving up the past. Am I wrong?” He looked at Lilith’s glowing green eyes. “I watch to make sure she’s doing good.” Lilith let out a sharp cackle. “You watch because you hope she returns, but that’s the beauty of it all. She won’t and you get to live with regrets forever.” She chuckled again as he lifted his hand and pulled Lilith to him. She zoomed across the room with a scream, her hat flying off. He caught her by the back of her dress collar and held her eye level as he stood. “What gives me my power Lilith?” Her glowing eyes drained as he took her magic through his hand. She felt weaker and her heart beat faster with stress and fear. “I’m sorry..” He dropped her to the floor. His dark eyes returned to normal. “No, I’m sorry you are right. The loneliness gets to me and I hope it does her too. I do it because I’m weak.” Lilith dusted herself off, picked up her hat and huffed as she crossed her arms. “You aren’t weak but you do like to be an ass sometimes.” He smiled as he sat back down. “Did you give the book to the girl?” Lilith nodded in reluctency. Makes sense my outburst was uncalled for. I hate my own mind. “Good, she will read it tomorrow. It is important she does, there is a dark presence forming again.”

Lilith looked at the water in front of him and touched it with her finger. The image swirled and twisted. He could see through the eyes of a teddy bear? “Hello Susie.” The little girl screamed and ran away. She hid behind the couch. “Susie it is ok, I’m the one who sent Lilith.” He could see Susie’s messy red hair as she peaked over the sofa arm.  “Don’t be afraid, I won’t take over Mr. Teddy long, I have a mission for you.” Curiosity killed the cat and convinced the girl. Susie walked out a little, “what is it Mr. Teddy?” He smiled. She was sweet, that’s what was needed for the evil that was coming. “You can call me The Watcher. I will guide you know for you have a power deep inside your heart like no one else. Your mission is to open your book tomorrow when Mr. Teddy hands it to you. Can you do that?” Susie nodded a finger in her mouth. “Good and here’s a reward,” he produced a butterfinger in the bear’s hand and Susie had no questions. With that Lilith removed her finger the image disappeared and Mr. Teddy fell down. “Do you think she is the one?” The watcher looked up at Lilith and nodded. He rose and wrapped his arms around Lilith’s shoulders at first she flinched. She however accepted the embrace and wrapped her arms around his waist. In seconds a rush of air circled them and she closed her eyes.

When she opened them they stood in the hall chambers of their home surrounded by the others. All the witches turned and bowed their heads as they showed the back of their hands. No secrets hide when the watcher arrives, they chanted. He walked down the long hall and up into the throne chair at the end of the vast hall. Thousands of witches stood in attendance. He sat down and they did the same. They curse one man with a life to live with no love. Yet, they give him the power of gods in return. He thought as his dark eyes scanned the room. “It’s back.” The witches in the room coiled at the words he spoke with hisses and shouts. “It’s back and it’s going to take someone with extreme virtue to defeat it.” The crowd shuffled and screamed, “Who”. Came the shouts. “Her name is Susie.” The crowd of witches erupt even louder. Lilith set a hand on his shoulder in support as she walked up to the chair. They jeered and laughed, “Just a young girl will save the day?” The crowd was so loud it hurt his head. He touched his neck with a finger and spoke. His voice boomed with a deafening echo, “Silence.” His voice echoed and the crowd instantly went quiet, not a sound to be heard. “She is the one, I saw it through the elder forest, she was chosen. For she has what all witches need in order to feed.” He didn’t have to say it for they all already knew. They themselves were given the book and read the pages given to them at the age of seven. It aged their minds and gave them the wisdom of thousands of years of witches. The book told them that every two hundred years a new man was chosen. Chosen to be fed upon by the witches, they fed on the magic the man possessed. He gained the magic by one means losing the one that fortune meant for him to be with. He was placed on earth to protect against the evil that rose up from the ground and tried to take with it the one thing all humans, all witches needed. The force that keeps the magical balance of the moon. The force connected in everyone’s heart, the force that chooses the witch’s needle to defend it. The force of love.
